A Zhangjiajie travel poster looking out from a sunlit cliff edge in Hunan, China, across a valley crowded with tall quartz-sandstone pillars. Each column is capped with pine and scrub, deep shadow fills the gullies between them, and layer upon layer of blue ridges runs back to a jagged skyline.
About the artwork
Flat colour planes with soft gradient shading and no hard outlines. In the foreground an apricot and ochre cliff catches direct sun, its vertical fractures drawn as long shadow bands, with bamboo and broadleaf foliage spilling over the lip. Beyond it dozens of free-standing pillars rise from the valley in the same sandy stone, sunlit faces peach and shaded sides deep blue-grey, each crowned with dark trees. The middle distance sinks into teal shadow, the far ranges lightening to pale mint. Captioned ZHANGJIAJIE above CHINA in white capitals.
Why you'll love it
- A dramatic vertical landscape of warm stone against cool blue shadow.
- The apricot cliff gives enough warmth to sit in a room neutral prints would leave cold.
- Museum-grade paper or matte canvas; canvas gives the shadowed valleys extra weight.
- A striking choice for anyone drawn to unusual rock formations.
Where it works at home
The tall format and heavy foreground rock suit a narrow wall, a chimney breast or the space beside a tall window, where the pillars have room to run. The peach and deep teal work against clay, warm white and dark green walls, and beside leather, brass and dark timber.
Sizes and materials
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Thirteen sizes are available, from 8 x 12 inches up to a 30 x 40 inch statement piece, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. Every piece is made to order.
Shipping and care
Each piece is printed and finished after the order is placed, then shipped in protective packaging — paper prints rolled in a rigid tube, canvas and framed canvas boxed with corner guards. Keep the artwork out of direct sunlight and wipe framed canvas with a dry, soft cloth. Paper prints are best handled by the edges until they are framed.
Questions
Which material should I choose? Paper is the most affordable option and lets you pick your own frame. Matte canvas adds depth and needs no glass. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang and is the usual choice for a feature wall.
Will the colours match what I see on screen? Printing is colour-managed, so the artwork stays very close to the preview. Paper reads slightly softer than canvas, which holds a touch more contrast.
Where are these stone pillars? They stand in the Wulingyuan scenic area of Zhangjiajie, in Hunan province, where thousands of quartz-sandstone columns have been cut out of a plateau by erosion. The artwork looks across one of the valleys from a cliff-edge viewpoint, which is how the pillars are usually seen.
