A Van Gogh portrait print: the postman Joseph Roulin in a navy uniform with gold buttons, his wide beard spreading over the collar, set against a green-yellow ground strewn with pink and orange flowers. Exhibition poster format, with Vincent van Gogh and The Postman (Joseph Roulin) in serif type below.
About the artwork
Van Gogh treated the sitter and the wallpaper as equals. Scrolling vines and daisies cover the whole ground in flat decorative pattern, and the figure is pushed forward against it without any modelling of space, the way a printed poster works. The beard is the real subject of the brushwork: green, brown and orange strokes twist in opposite directions and split it into two waves. Gold letters on the cap read POSTES, and the signature Vincent sits in red in the upper left of the painting.
Why you'll love it
- A portrait with humour. The sitter looks straight out, which keeps a room from feeling formal.
- Pattern does the decorating. The floral ground carries colour without needing anything else on the wall.
- Good over a desk. Vertical format suits narrow walls in an office or hallway.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Thirteen sizes in all: 8\" x 12\" through 30\" x 40\", plus A4–A1.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang. 12\" x 16\" to 30\" x 40\".
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural. 12\" x 16\" to 30\" x 40\".
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Hang it on a plain wall so the pattern has room, or above a desk where the blue picks up a chair or a lamp. Natural oak keeps it friendly; black makes it graphic. It sits well beside a second Van Gogh portrait at the same size.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What is written on the cap? POSTES, the French word for the postal service, in gold letters.
Is this an original painting? No. It is a modern gallery-style reproduction printed to order, not an original work and not an officially licensed museum edition.
Is the background really that busy? Yes, the flowered ground covers the full sheet behind the figure.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
