A Tokyo cat print for a living room that likes its evenings slow. Five cats in black and white and orange lie asleep across a blue-gray tiled roof while a cream full moon hangs in an orange-red sky. The lettering reads TOKYO JAPAN and THE ROOF, which is about as much plot as a sleeping cat needs.
About the artwork
The sky is orange-red, the roof tiles are blue-gray and the full moon is a soft cream circle, so warm and cool split the sheet between sky and roof. The five cats are spread across the tiles in black and white and orange, every one of them asleep. The lettering reads "TOKYO JAPAN" and "THE ROOF," with a small vertical block of kanji in the right corner. Retro in style, with clean flat color. Portrait.
Why you'll love it
- Five cats, all asleep. Nobody is doing anything, which is exactly why it calms a busy living room.
- A moon over the tiles. The cream moon against the orange-red sky gives the rooftop a quiet late-evening mood.
- Warm sky, cool roof. Orange-red above and blue-gray below make a strong two-part color split that reads from across the room.
- A city seen from one roof. TOKYO JAPAN is on the art, but the view stays on a single rooftop, so it feels personal rather than touristy.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Thirteen sizes in all: 8" x 12" through 30" x 40", plus A4–A1.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Hang it in a living room above a reading chair, a cat bed or a low bookcase. Blue-gray or slate walls repeat the roof tiles, while white walls let the orange-red sky glow. At 18" x 24" it sits well above a side table; 24" x 36" works as the main piece over a sofa. A natural or black floating frame suits the retro look. Pair it with a warm table lamp beside it so the corner glows like the moonlit roof in the evening.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What does THE ROOF refer to? It names the scene: five cats asleep on a tiled rooftop, with TOKYO JAPAN placing it in the city.
Is this a good gift for a cat lover? It suits anyone who loves cats or Tokyo, and the retro style keeps it grown-up rather than cute.
Which wall colors work with the orange-red sky? Slate blue or blue-gray walls echo the roof tiles, while white or cream lets the orange-red sky stand out.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
