About the artwork

Terracotta on peach, one ink throughout. Three blossoms open along a slim twig, each one ringed with fine stamens drawn a hair at a time, and tight unopened buds sit between them where the branch narrows toward its tip. A fern ornament fills the lower-left corner and the 1¢ denomination sits in a circle opposite. The perforated edge is drawn as real die-cut scallops on a plain cream sheet, so the stamp sits on the page as an object. Portrait, 2:3.

Styling it at home

Terracotta is the colour of fired clay, so it belongs in the main room where furniture is already doing the talking: over the sofa, above a mantel, at the end of a long living space. The diagonal branch rewards scale, and 24" x 36" or 30" x 40" on matte canvas is where it really opens up — anything under 16" x 24" throws away the stamen detail. Leather, wool and a clay-toned rug echo the ink; a black or espresso moulding stops the peach ground going washy under warm bulbs. If you build a row, break it with something cool such as a blue or slate state at the far end.
