A Japanese crane print for a bedroom that should feel calm. Two red-crowned cranes, known as tancho, fly across a pale blue sky with their black and white wings spread wide, past soft cream clouds. "HOKKAIDO JAPAN" and "CRANES" are lettered on the design. It is a quiet picture to wake up to.
About the artwork
Drawn in a woodblock-style manner inspired by ukiyo-e, the woodblock prints of Edo-period Japan, the palette stays soft: pale blue sky, cream clouds, and the cranes in black and white with red crowns. The two birds fly with wings fully open, which gives the sheet broad, sweeping shapes. The lettering reads "HOKKAIDO JAPAN" and "CRANES", with a short line of Japanese characters. Portrait.
Why you'll love it
- A pair in flight. Two cranes flying together make a gentle, balanced subject for the wall above a bed.
- Soft sky, sharp birds. Pale blue and cream let the black, white and red of the cranes stand out cleanly.
- Ukiyo-e in spirit. This is a new woodblock-style design that nods to Edo-period prints.
- Named on the sheet. HOKKAIDO JAPAN and CRANES give it the feel of a travel keepsake.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Thirteen sizes in all: 8" x 12" through 30" x 40", plus A4–A1.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Over a bed, 24" x 36" or 30" x 40" gives the wings room to spread. Pale blue, white or warm cream bedroom walls keep the mood soft, with white linen, light oak and a woven headboard. A natural or white wood frame suits the quiet palette. Pair it with a Mount Fuji print in the same pale blues, or let it hang alone with a plain lamp on each side of the bed.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
What kind of cranes are shown? Red-crowned cranes, called tancho in Japanese, with black and white wings and a red crown.
Is it calm enough for a bedroom? Yes. The pale blue sky and cream clouds keep it soft, and the cranes add movement without loud color.
What size for above a queen bed? 24" x 36" suits most queen headboards; 30" x 40" works for a king or a tall wall.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.
