A Japanese cat print set out like a modern exhibition poster: a square panel shows a black cat swimming a winding blue-green river past white lotus, broad leaves and two egrets, with YAYOI KUSAMA printed in large capitals above and JAPAN 1987 below.
About the artwork
Only the cat's head and its raised tail break the surface, so the river seems to carry it along like a leaf. The water is drawn in curling blue and white lines that loop around the rocks, and the lotus leaves on the left are so large they almost frame the scene. One egret stands at the top right; a second shows only its legs at the upper edge, cut off by the panel. The painted square sits on plain cream paper, with the lettering set in clean black type: YAYOI KUSAMA, 草間 弥生, JAPAN 1987 and 日本, plus a small seal. This is a new illustration in a vintage Japanese manner; the name is part of the poster's typography and the artwork is not by that artist. Vintage and illustrative. Portrait.
Why you'll love it
- Gallery look at home. The poster layout with a framed image and clean type suits a modern living room.
- Calm colour. Moss, blue-grey and cream keep a bedroom wall restful.
- A cat with a twist. A swimming cat is an unexpected subject that starts conversations.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Thirteen sizes in all: 8" x 12" through 30" x 40", plus A4–A1.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Hang it above a sofa or a low bench where the square image sits near eye level. Plants, stone and pale wood repeat the river bank, and a white or natural frame keeps the cream margin crisp. It works well at 18" x 24" or larger, where the lettering has room to breathe.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.

Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
