A Japanese cat print in engraved, worn-in colour: a black cat with amber eyes sits upright in a teal kimono patterned with cream and orange flowers, tied with an orange obi, in front of a pale gold disc on cream paper.
About the artwork
The cat is posed like a formal portrait sitter, front on and perfectly still, which is what makes the picture funny. The golden disc behind its head works like a halo or a rising moon and pulls all attention to the face. The kimono pattern is printed with slightly broken edges, as if from an old worn block, while fine wave lines run through the disc. A curled tail slips out from under the hem, the one detail that gives the game away. The large character and the small panel of text are decorative lettering and are not meant to be read. Vintage and illustrative. Portrait.
Why you'll love it
- A gift for cat people. It is instantly recognisable as a cat portrait, with a gentle joke instead of a cartoon.
- Warm but quiet colour. Teal and orange on cream sit easily in a bedroom or living room without shouting.
- Pairs with other animal prints. The cream ground matches the rest of our Japanese animal range.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Thirteen sizes in all: 8" x 12" through 30" x 40", plus A4–A1.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
Hang it above a reading chair or a bedside table where the cat can keep watch. The teal kimono suits sage, green or blue walls, and the orange obi links to a mustard throw or a copper lamp. In a natural oak frame at 12" x 18" it makes a charming single piece; pair it with a second cat print for a small portrait gallery.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
Can the Japanese lettering be translated? No. The lettering is decorative and does not form real words, so we do not translate it.
Is it suitable for a child's room? Yes. The cat is calm and friendly, and the colours are soft enough for a bedroom.
Does it come framed? Choose framed canvas for a ready-to-hang piece in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
