This Big Sur watercolor print shows Bixby Creek Bridge carrying Highway 1 across a steep canyon on the California coast, with the Pacific breaking below and wildflowers at the cliff edge. It is an artistic, watercolor-style interpretation of the Big Sur coast, not an exact view.
About the artwork
Fine brown ink outlines the bridge's great concrete arch and its row of slender columns, while the coastal cliffs are washed in green, gold and brown. The sea is built from layered Pacific blues, with white surf and a pale band of sea mist left as bare paper. The bridge sits left of center in the middle ground, seen from a pullout on its north side, with the highway curving south along the cliffs and sea stacks and a small beach on the right. Orange poppies and purple lupine fill the foreground cliff edge, and green hills place the scene in spring. The left edge dissolves into orange and blue streaks with long drips. "BIG SUR" is set in spaced navy capitals across the top.
Why you'll love it
- Poppies and lupine. Orange California poppies and purple lupine crowd the foreground and give the coast a bright spring edge.
- Life on the bridge. A few cars and a cyclist cross the span while pelicans glide over the water.
- Pacific blue palette. Layered ocean blues and sage-green slopes are lifted by small touches of orange, purple and pale concrete grey.
- Made to order. Printed after you buy, colour-managed, never warehoused.
Sizes and materials
- Paper — archival matte, rolled and unframed. Thirteen sizes in all: 8" x 12" through 30" x 40", plus A4–A1.
- Matte canvas — stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Framed canvas — solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural. 12" x 16" to 30" x 40".
- Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.
Styling it at home
The blues and sage greens sit well in a coastal living room, a calm bedroom or a home office with white or driftwood tones. It makes a thoughtful gift for anyone who has driven Highway 1 or is planning a California road trip.
Shipping and care
Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.
Questions people ask
Is this an exact view of Big Sur? No. This is an artistic interpretation of Big Sur, and some details of the canyon and the bridge's supports are simplified. It captures the feel of the coast rather than a surveyed view.
What text is printed on it? Only the name "BIG SUR," set in spaced navy capitals across the top. There is no other lettering on the print.
Print & materials
Every design is made to order on one of three materials:
- Fine art paper — thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. The choice if you already own a frame.
- Matte canvas — gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box. No glass, no glare.
- Framed canvas in white, black, espresso or natural wood — a slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted. Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms; white and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
Sizes run from 8 x 12 inches up to large statement pieces, plus A4, A3, A2 and A1 for standard European frames. The exact sizes available for this design are listed in the Size menu above.

Materials
Three ways to print it.
Same artwork, same colour-managed printing — the material decides how it hangs and how much wall it holds.
Fine art paper
Thick 200 gsm archival gallery-grade paper with a smooth matte finish, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks.
- The most affordable option, and the one to pick if you already own a frame.
- Reads slightly softer than canvas.
- Ships rolled in a rigid tube.
Matte canvas
Gallery-wrapped over a solid wood stretcher, ready to hang straight out of the box.
- No glass, so no glare — good for bright rooms.
- Holds a touch more contrast than paper.
- Boxed with corner guards.
Framed canvas
A slim solid-wood floating frame with the hanging hardware already fitted, in white, black, espresso or natural wood.
- Natural and espresso suit warm, timber-heavy rooms.
- White and black sit better in minimalist and monochrome spaces.
- The usual choice for a feature wall — nothing to assemble.
