About the artwork

Terracotta red on a blush ground, one ink throughout. The engraving shows three open five-petal blossoms with three stalked buds still closed behind them, carried on a woody twig with oval leaves — the moment an orchard branch is half open rather than in full flower. A fern ornament fills the lower-left corner and the 1¢ denomination sits in a circle opposite. The perforated edge is drawn as real die-cut scallops on a plain cream sheet. Portrait, 2:3.
