National Park Poster Styles: WPA vs Mid-Century vs Watercolor

Yosemite National Park in three poster styles, WPA Style, Mid-Century Modern and Watercolor, in light oak frames on a sunlit wall above a walnut console

Last updated October 7, 2026

The three national park poster styles most people choose between are WPA, mid-century modern and watercolor. Pick WPA for a lettered, framed-looking poster with coordinates; mid-century modern for flat, bright shapes in a modern room; watercolor for an unlettered painting that suits bedrooms and quiet walls. All three start at $26.

The three styles at a glance

Every park in our US national parks wall art collection is drawn in several series, and three of them cover most of what people ask us about. The quickest way to see the difference is one park in all three. Below is Yosemite: a WPA-style print of the falls, which the National Park Service measures at 2,425 feet; a mid-century modern view of the valley; and a watercolor of the same valley with no lettering at all.

Price and size will not decide this for you: the three series share the same 13 vertical sizes and the same price ladder. What decides it is how much text you want on the wall and how graphic the room already is. If you want the full line-up of eleven series, including panoramic and oil, our guide to the best national park posters lists them all; this article stays with the three-way choice.

A quick test before you scroll on:

  1. Will people read the wall from close up, in an office, hallway or entry? Choose WPA.
  2. Is the furniture modern and the wall plain white or a single bold color? Choose mid-century modern.
  3. Is it a bedroom, bathroom or dining room where you want calm and no text? Choose watercolor.

Same park, three styles: Zion and Grand Teton

Zion shows how far apart the styles can sit even on one subject. The WPA print follows the 1930s layout, picture panel above and title band below, and its composition zigzags: the river enters bottom right, swings left through the cottonwoods and points back at the Watchman, the peak most visitors meet first at the south entrance. The mid-century print moves into the Narrows, two orange walls closing in a V toward a sliver of blue sky over turquoise water. The watercolor pulls back to sunlit walls and a river in shade, built light to dark, wash over wash.

Grand Teton makes the same point with a mountain. The WPA print runs the river in from the lower right past the cottonwoods and up to the snowy summit, in teal, snow and olive. The mid-century version centers the peaks under the title, with a lake across the middle and a yellow wildflower meadow filling the bottom third; Grand Teton itself rises to 13,775 feet. The watercolor drops the lettering and the summer color for a lone barn under a stormy range, wet-in-wet clouds and grass in quick flicked strokes.

Notice what changes the mood: lettering and edges. The two lettered styles feel like souvenirs of a trip; the watercolor feels like a painting that happens to be of a park.

Choose WPA style if…

Choose WPA if you want the print to name the park and look finished before it is framed. The format borrows from the New Deal posters the Works Progress Administration printed between 1936 and 1943, which the Library of Congress holds by the hundred; the history of WPA posters explains how the original park series was screen-printed in Berkeley. Our prints are new drawings in that language, not copies. The cream margin gives a thin black or oak frame something to sit against, which is why WPA prints work in home offices, entryways and dens where people stop and read.

The style also holds a set together better than any other. Each sheet repeats the same top line and title band, so three or four parks hung in a row read as one collection even when the palettes differ, from the warm sandstone of Mesa Verde to the moss and teal of Shenandoah. Choose mid-century modern if…

Choose mid-century modern if the room is already modern: walnut, white walls, a low sofa, plants. The series uses flat vector shapes and smooth gradients rather than texture, and every park carries the same white title and dotted subtitle, so a grid reads as one set. The color runs brighter than WPA: magenta meadows under Mount Rainier, a snowy range behind the arch at Arches, teal and gold at Joshua Tree. That brightness is the point in a north-facing room or an apartment with plain white walls.

Mid-century prints are also the easiest of the three to hang in a kitchen, hallway or kids' room, where a painterly watercolor can look out of place. Keep the frames thin and light, oak or black, and let the color carry the wall. The mid century modern wall art collection has every park in this series, plus non-park prints that share its flat-color look.

Choose watercolor if…

Choose watercolor if you want the park without the poster. There is no lettering on any watercolor print, so it reads as a landscape painting first, which suits bedrooms, bathrooms and dining rooms where text on the wall feels busy. The technique shows: washes laid light to dark, hard edges on the landform, and highlights left as bare paper. On Acadia the white of the paper stands in for the surf; at Crater Lake, 1,943 feet deep and the deepest lake in the United States, it stands in for the snow.

Watercolor also forgives mixed furniture. With no title band to align, it sits happily next to a lamp, a plant or a mirror on a sideboard. A natural or white frame keeps the highlights bright; black sharpens the edges for a more modern room. See every park in this series in watercolor wall art.

Can you mix styles on one wall?

Yes, with one rule: keep two things constant so the third can change. The easiest version is one park in two styles. Saguaro works well because both prints share the same desert evening: the WPA print backlights the saguaros against a purple mountain and a glowing sky, while the mid-century print goes hot pink and tangerine with blooming prickly pear along a sandy path.

The second version is three parks in three styles that share a region and a frame. A northern Rockies trio, for example: mid-century Yellowstone with its colorful hot spring, WPA Grand Teton and watercolor Glacier, all in the same light oak frame at the same 16 x 24 inch size. Same frame, same size, shared blues and greens; only the style changes. If you are planning more than three, how to hang a gallery wall covers spacing and layout step by step.

When you hang a lettered print next to an unlettered one, line up the tops of the frames rather than the centers, and keep the gap between frames the same, about 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm). The lettered print sets the reading direction, so put it on the left or in the middle. What does not work: mixing all three styles at three different sizes in three frame colors. The eye has nothing to hold on to.

Sizes, paper and frames for each style

All three series come in the same 13 vertical sizes, from 8 x 12 inches (20 x 30 cm) up to 30 x 40 inches (76 x 102 cm), plus A4 to A1. A few reference prices on paper, identical across the styles:

  1. 8 x 12 in: $26, a shelf or desk
  2. 12 x 18 in: $33, a gallery wall of three or more
  3. 16 x 24 in: $40, a pair above a console or bed
  4. 24 x 36 in: $55, a single print above a sofa
  5. 30 x 40 in: $90, a statement wall

Matte canvas starts at $64 (12 x 16 in) and framed canvas comes in white, black, espresso or natural. For WPA, a thin frame is enough because the cream margin already acts like a mat; for watercolor, a white or natural frame keeps the paper-white highlights bright. For exact heights above a sofa or bed, see the size guide.

Every print is made to order and printed within 3 to 5 business days. Shipping is free in the US and $5 elsewhere, and the discount is automatic at checkout: 7% off two prints, 10% off three or more, so a matching trio costs less than three singles.

Our recommendations

Four more parks, one or two from each style, that hang well on their own.

FAQ

Which national park poster style is the most popular?

WPA-style and mid-century prints account for most of our national park orders. Popularity matters less than fit, though: pick the style that matches the room's furniture and how loudly you want the park name on the wall.

Do watercolor national park prints have the park name on them?

No. Our watercolor series has no lettering on the image at all, so it reads as a landscape painting. The park name appears only in the product title.

Can I mix WPA and mid-century prints on one wall?

Yes, if something else stays constant: the same frame color, the same print size and a shared color in the artwork. The safest mix is one park in two styles hung as a pair.

Are the three styles the same price?

Yes. All three series start at $26 for an 8 x 12 inch paper print and run in the same 13 vertical sizes up to 30 x 40 inches ($90 on paper). Matte canvas and framed canvas cost the same across the three styles too.
