About the artwork

An unusual structure — the subject is small and the setting is enormous. The palace occupies perhaps a fifth of the frame; the rest is forest below and cloud beyond, which is exactly how the place reads in person. That imbalance is the point. Colour is deployed the same way: the palace carries the only saturated red, marigold and copper-green in the image, and everything around it is worked in layered greens, grey-blue cloud and pale silver haze. The forest canopy is drawn as thousands of small stippled marks rather than blocked shapes, which is where most of the detail lives. Title in wide-tracked uppercase with Portugal beneath.
