About the artwork

The whole image turns on one diagonal. The meadow rises from the bottom right to the ridge at the top left in an unbroken sweep, and every other element — rock strata, cloud, the far valley — is angled to reinforce it. Colour is split cleanly: acid green and olive on the grass, cool grey-blue and pale bone on the rock, which is drawn in hard vertical facets to catch the light down each spire. Small stones and alpine flowers are picked out along the bottom edge, giving a foothold of foreground detail before the eye is thrown up the slope. Title in wide-tracked uppercase with Italy beneath.
