A Toadstool Hoodoos Utah poster built around a single balanced rock. A slab of dark red-brown caprock sits on a slender neck, and below it the pedestal flares out into a soft white pillar of eroded siltstone, fluted from top to bottom by runoff. A second red block leans in at the left, pale badlands and low mesas run along the right horizon, and a sandy wash with red globemallow and green shrubs fills the foreground.

About the artwork

Illustrative with strong tonal modelling: the caprock is faceted like a boulder, the white pedestal is drawn with dozens of vertical erosion channels, and thin white bands of gypsum run horizontally through the red rock. The palette is unusually split - brick red, rust and oxblood above, chalk white and pale grey below - set against a teal sky with tall cream cumulus and a strip of tan and olive badlands. Small red-orange wildflowers dot the sandy edge. Type is printed at the base in white capitals: TOADSTOOL HOODOOS over UTAH. Portrait, 2:3.

Why you'll love it

  • Two rocks, two colours, one column. The red cap on the white pedestal is the clearest illustration of differential erosion in the Southwest.
  • A single subject, close up. No wide panorama - the hoodoo fills the frame, which makes it work as a graphic object on a wall.
  • Off the main circuit. A short walk off Highway 89 between Kanab and Page, and far less photographed than the big parks.
  • Red and white read from anywhere. The contrast holds at small sizes where busier landscapes go muddy.

Sizes and materials

  • Paper - archival matte, rolled and unframed. Nine sizes from 8" x 12" to 30" x 40", plus A4-A1 for European frames.
  • Matte canvas - stretched on a wooden bar, no glare, ready to hang.
  • Framed canvas - solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural.
  • Pigment-based archival inks, rated to resist fading for decades indoors.

Styling it at home

Oxblood over chalk white is a graphic pairing that suits a plain modern room - white, bone or pale grey walls let the hoodoo act almost like a piece of sculpture. It also sits well against a deep clay or rust paint, which picks up the caprock. In an arched alcove or on a shelf between plants, like the photographs above, a natural oak frame keeps it warm; a white frame merges with the pedestal and makes the red cap the whole picture.

Shipping and care

Unframed prints ship rolled in a protective tube. Framed canvas arrives ready to hang. Keep prints out of direct sunlight to protect the colour, and dust canvas with a dry, soft cloth.

Questions people ask

What size should I get? Because it is one bold shape, this print works smaller than most landscapes. 12" x 18" suits a gallery wall, 18" x 24" or 24" x 36" for a room where it hangs alone.

Does it come framed? Paper and matte canvas ship unframed. Framed canvas arrives stretched in a solid wood floating frame in white, black, espresso or natural, with hardware fitted.

What does the poster say? The caption reads TOADSTOOL HOODOOS in white capitals with UTAH centred below it.

How is this different from the other Utah prints here? This is the balanced red-on-white toadstool near Kanab, on the Grand Staircase-Escalante side of the state. Goblin Valley is a whole field of squat brown mushroom rocks rather than one tall column, Thor's Hammer is the orange capstone spire inside Bryce Canyon, Coral Pink Sand Dunes is dune country, and Factory Butte and Fisher Towers are free-standing desert monoliths of a different shape entirely.
