About the artwork

Two colours, maximum contrast — and the boldest composition in the collection. There is no establishing view and no horizon; the amphitheatre simply fills the frame and runs off three edges, which is what makes it feel monumental rather than photographic. Lit stone is coral and burnt orange, shadow is a single deep petrol blue, and there is almost nothing in between. The stonework is drawn with dense short strokes so the surface reads as pitted and eroded, and the arch openings are cut clean through to sky. A cypress and a slice of umbrella pine hold the right edge. Title in wide-tracked uppercase with Italy beneath. Portrait, 2:3.
