About the artwork

The composition uses a device the rest of the series does not: a foreground frame. The lemon branch sits in the bottom right, drawn large and close with veined leaves and fruit rendered at full detail, so the village behind it is thrown into middle distance. The dome is the second focal point — green and yellow glazed tiles laid out in a radiating pattern, the only piece of ornament in the image. Behind and above, the limestone cliff rises in grey-green facets. The sea is turquoise flattening to pale blue at the horizon, with a low sun band on the left edge.
