About the artwork

Almost a study in symmetry. The island and its reflection form a single diamond that fills most of the frame, and the print gives it a wide pale horizon and an empty sky to sit in rather than crowding the composition. Warm gold and sand tones carry every lit surface — the abbey walls, the granite rock, the village roofs stacked below — against a cool pale blue sky and grey-blue water. The reflection is drawn slightly looser than the island, with thin horizontal breaks that read as shallow water moving over sand, and a run of rippled sand and small stones closes the bottom right corner.
